Flash Sterilization of Implantable Items SUMMARY
Updated 11/03

Flash sterilization of implantables should be used only in emergency situations when there is insufficient time to sterilize an item by the preferred prepackaged method. However, when flash sterilization is absolutely necessary, strict adherence to the procedure outlined in the policy must be followed. To facilitate this process, the Johns Hopkins Hospital (JHH) uses a “rapid read out” biological indicator with each flashed load. It is the responsibility of the operating room staff NOT to release any flashed item unless the biological indicator has been read as negative.
