CLEANING PROTOCOL FOR MULTIDRUG-RESISTANT ACINETOBACTER (MDR-AB)

Hospital approved disinfectant should be used for the following:

  1. Routine cleaning of all bathrooms (patient and staff)
  2. Routine cleaning of all sinks/ faucets
  3. Terminal cleaning of all rooms (single and two bedded if both beds empty):
    1. All surfaces
    2. Bedside tables
    3. Beds – siderails
    4. Headboards
    5. Mattresses
    6. Shelves
  4. Routine cleaning of soiled utility room
  5. Routine cleaning of clean utility room
  6. Routine cleaning of all shared equipment (between patient usage):
    1. I.V. poles
    2. Commodes
    3. Wheelchairs
    4. Stretchers
    5. Glucometers
  7. Terminal cleaning should be performed by designated personnel and those personnel should not clean areas occupied by non-MDR-Acinetobacter patients.
  8. Change mop water after cleaning MDR-Acinetobacter patient room is completed. Change mop head and send to laundry. Leave mop handle in patient’s room (disinfect with terminal cleaning).
  9. Change curtains and send to laundry during terminal cleaning.

Ventilator equipment and other reusable equipment should always be cleaned and disinfected according to manufacturer’s guidelines between patients.
