Brucellosis (draining lesion)

Lesion stops draining

Symptoms
Acute or insidious onset, intermittent or irregular fever, headache, weakness, profuse sweating, chills, arthralgia, depression, weight loss, and generalized aching.

Comments:
There is a risk of infection for laboratory personnel handling samples. Label microbiology specimens “brucellosis” so that samples may be handled appropriately.

Contact with infected animal tissues. Consumption of contaminated dairy products. Accidental exposure to vaccine strain. Exposure to laboratory (microbiologic) samples

Prophylaxis for exposed
Laboratory exposures: Doxycycline 100 mg PO BID and Rifampin 600-900 mg PO once daily for 21 days. For conjunctival exposure - 4-6 weeks prophylaxis.

Treatment for ill
Doxycycline 100 mg PO BID and Rifampin 600-900 mg PO/IV qd OR, OR Ciprofloxin 500 IV BID PLUS Rifampin 600-900mg PO/IV qd OR Ceftriaxone 1-2gms IV BID PLUS Rifampin 600-900mg PO/IV qd (for CNS disease). ALL for 6 weeks.
